Vtáčnik

Via ferratas near Sekaniny

This page is part of a guide to Sekaniny, a recreation area above Lehota pod Vtáčnikom in central Slovakia. Right here are the via ferrata sections on the Šrí Kapila loop and the short Volkov zub via ferrata — we have done them ourselves and describe them in detail with photos (in Slovak). On the other side of the Vtáčnik mountains, near Handlová, are Veľký Grič and Via Fafkáč.

Difficulty

Grades A – F

  • A

easy. Staples, ladders and cables on terrain that isn't very steep. Fine for beginners.

  • B

moderately difficult. Steeper, in places vertical terrain. You need some arm strength.

  • C

difficult. Longer vertical and exposed sections. Fitness and experience required.

  • D

very difficult. Vertical to overhanging sections with fewer artificial footholds. Strong arms needed.

  • E

extremely difficult. Overhangs and climbing passages. Experienced people only.

  • F

climbing. Essentially a climbing route protected by a via ferrata cable.

We use the A – F scale given by most Slovak operators. Intermediate grades such as B/C mean the route has sections of both. The Austrian Schall scale (A – G) and the numeric OpenStreetMap scale (0 – 6) don't match it exactly — where sources disagree, we give a range.

Gear

Sit harness, via ferrata set with an energy absorber, helmet and gloves. Sets are made for a certain weight range — lighter children also need a rope belay. Where gear can be rented, we say so for each area.

Not via ferratas

Protected hiking trails

Hiking trails with chains, ladders or rungs. People don't usually use a via ferrata set on them, but in the gorges and on the ridges you need a sure step and a head for heights.
